What is Christ in the City?
Christ in the City is a two-week intense service program that is
a groundbreaking movement among young adults in the United
States. It comprises of College-age Catholics drawn from all
over the country for the sake of their formation for Catholic
leadership, the development of an integrated model of Catholic
charity and service, and a public witness to the Gospel.
At the conclusion of the two weeks, the participants will be the
key contributors on how to implement a yearlong service program
for an abundant amount of volunteers serving in Denver. God
willing, this will be a model for other dioceses to follow.
Dates: June 5th - June 20th
What are the main components of this mission program?
Spiritual
It is important for a missionary to be equipped with the proper
spiritual tools to not only serve but to serve well. In order to
spread the love of Christ, we need to be active participants in
knowing and loving Him on a daily basis. Therefore, you will
live in community and partake in daily prayers including, but
not limited to, Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. In addition,
you will have a mountain retreat at St. Malo’s, adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament, nightly group reflections and plenty of
opportunities for spiritual direction and faith formation. We
are partnering with the Christian Life Movement who will be the
main spiritual facilitator.
Intellectual:
Another important component of this program is to teach the
participants the “nuts and bolts” of serving the poor. You will
have the opportunity of meeting numerous scholars, and possibly
Archbishop Chaput, as guest speakers on the topics of Catholic
social teachings, evangelization, charity and more!
Service:
By combining the spiritual and intellectual components to
serving the poor, Christ in the City is committed to “integral
human development” as defined by Benedict XVI in Love in Truth.
You will serve in both Catholic Charities programs and
non-Charities programs in small teams. Some of the service
opportunities may include: homelessness, elder care, emergency
shelters and education. Volunteers will follow a modest dress
code and have a clear identity in the city. The goal is for you
to be recognized in the communities in which you serve as being
a young catholic committed to fully human development,
inter-cultural service and leadership.
