A Story of Hope and Healing After Nearly Two Decades of Homelessness

After 19 years of homelessness—living on the streets and in his car—David is finally finding hope and healing. For nearly two decades, his life was filled with uncertainty, moving from place to place and surviving day by day. But today, he has a place to call his own: a home at St. Valentine Apartments in Loveland, a Catholic Charities ministry providing permanent, supportive housing for individuals who have experienced chronic homelessness.

David was among the first residents to move into St. Valentine Apartments, and he proudly calls it home. More than just a roof over his head, St. Valentine has given him stability, community and a renewed sense of purpose.

Eager to invest in himself, David takes full advantage of the opportunities available at St. Valentine. Recently, he has been attending music therapy sessions led by interns from Colorado State University. During one of these sessions, David felt compelled to share his story and reflect on the people who have shaped his journey.

A talented artist, David has spent years capturing the faces of those he has encountered, using his art to express deep emotions and unique characteristics of people who have touched his life. His greatest joy comes from creating, and his most treasured piece is a drawing of his grandson gazing out over a lake—a work that symbolizes family, boyhood, serenity and hope.

Proud to showcase his artwork in his home, David has always valued sharing his creativity with others. Before finding stability at St. Valentine Apartments, he contributed to a community mural at the Sister Mary Alice Murphy Center for Hope, a Catholic Charities partner organization. The experience left a lasting impact on David. The project brought friends together, providing a sense of unity and purpose during a challenging time.

Beyond his artistry, David has become a passionate advocate for mental health. He understands the importance of healing and self-expression, believing that a healthy mind leads to a healthier life. By embracing vulnerability and fostering community, he acknowledges that overcoming homelessness requires both personal strength and the support of others.

“I never imagined I’d have a place like this, a community like this,” David shares. “I spent so many years alone, and now, I have support, I have a home and I have people who truly care.”

Thanks to the support of Catholic Charities Housing, David has found not just a safe place to live, but a fresh start. His story is one of resilience, creativity and gratitude—proof that, even after years of hardship, hope and healing are possible.
