Catholic Charities’ Adopt-a-Family program connects givers and receivers

More than 700 needy families to receive Christmas from anonymous donors

Denver, CO—More than 700 low-income and needy families will receive Christmas gifts from anonymous donors through Catholic Charities’ annual Adopt-a-Family program, a tradition that makes it possible for families who wouldn’t otherwise receive presents.

“I love watching my children open presents,” said Marina Diakite, a single mom of five children who received gifts through Adopt-a-Family in a previous year. “I’m just so grateful. It’s a joy in my heart. We pray and we thank God for allowing that family to give to us.”

Her family is one of hundreds selected through the Adopt-a-Family program to receive needed items and toys. Every year, families with great need are identified and then paired with other families who anonymously provide clothing, household items and toys. Many of the families are homeless or the working poor.

Media are invited to attend the donor drop-off event Tuesday, December 10 at All Saints Parish, 2559 S. Federal Blvd., Denver.

Diakite’s children—all 10 years old and younger—opened presents one year to find a remote-control helicopter, a complete set of art supplies, an electric pencil sharpener, and warm clothes. She said she would buy presents but her low-paying jobs barely cover living costs and their Section 8 home in Aurora.

Adopt-a-Family gives families the chance to give out of generosity and for others to receive their charity. Sarah Hanus said she and her family appreciate the opportunity to adopt another family in need.

“I just can’t tell you how much we love it. It’s always just amazing,” said Hanus, who lives in Westminster with her husband and three children. “We send the gifts on and love working through Catholic Charities.”
