AARP Volunteers Bring Tax Support to Centro

Each year, tax season brings challenges for many seniors and low-income families — but at Catholic Charities Centro San Juan Diego, it also brings hope.

In partnership with AARP, Centro is offering free, reliable tax preparation services through April 11. All volunteer preparers are trained and certified through AARP, ensuring community members receive accurate support at no cost.

Betty Fox, a participant who received assistance this year, shared her experience: “This is my third year coming here. The service was good. Although there were some technical difficulties with the computers, the girl was lovely and helped me with my taxes.”

This service is designed especially for seniors and individuals with limited income, helping them file confidently, maximize refunds and meet their tax obligations without financial strain. The growing demand has made one thing abundantly clear: this is a resource our community deeply relies on.

The Saturday morning sessions have been especially eye-opening. On February 14, residents began lining up as early as 2:00 a.m., even starting their own sign-in sheet at the door to secure a spot. Seniors remain the program’s top priority and staff work hard to accommodate as many participants as possible.

The atmosphere inside the center remains warm, patient and hopeful. Volunteers take their time with each person, ensuring they understand their tax documents and feel supported throughout the process. Their commitment — along with the trust of those who return year after year — reflects the heart of this program.

There are two sessions left — one on March 28 and one on April 11.

Thanks to dedicated volunteers and strong community partnerships, Centro San Juan Diego continues to serve as a lifeline during one of the most stressful times of the year.
