Denver Post: A rider gets a second chance to finish as Ride The Rockies finishes its 31st tour

FORT COLLINS — Three hundred sixty-three days ago, 200 yards from the finish line, Tom Schwein hit a divot in the road. Schwein, who was 99.98 percent finished with his fifth Ride The Rockies, fell on his face, breaking eight bones and missing death by a matter of millimeters.
Schwein, founder and captain of the downtown Denver homeless charity Samaritan House’s Ride The Rockies team, was back riding his bicycle three weeks after the accident. He knew he had to do it soon or he might not ride again. “I said ‘God’s not done with me.’ ”
A month after picking up his bike, Schwein said he knew he would do the next Ride The Rockies. It wasn’t easy, he said. But Schwein’s a year-round trainer, and he built his confidence back in the 3,000 miles he rode training for this year’s tour.
