From the Desk of the CEO
For three years Deedee had lived in a tent on the sidewalk, most recently outside Catholic Charities’ Samaritan House.
“It was a small home, but it was mine,” she told a news reporter.
She had undergone multiple back surgeries leaving her confined to a wheelchair. But she was still afraid to enter a shelter.
So Deedee resisted seeking help inside the shelter until our staff convinced her to come inside. She discovered that Catholic Charities was safe and welcoming and agreed it was time to get help through the shelter program.
“I gave in and it was one of the best decisions of my life.”
Deedee has been able to rest and recover from surgery and eat nutritious meals, enabling her to reach a healthy weight. She has taken classes on money management, and worked on finding housing as a part of the extended stay program. Deedee is grateful for the support and care she has received from staff.
Fighting back tears, she told a reporter, “I, too, had that hopelessness and it’s no longer there.”
Mike Sinnett, VP of Shelters for Catholic Charities, said, “If we can produce a success story in a challenging situation, that’s why we’re here.” Deedee has now been approved for housing and will soon move into her own apartment.
“It was made possible because I came in these front doors,” she said. “I’m on my way.”
Catholic Charities is eager to provide more people like Deedee with loving support, hot meals, safety, educational classes and assistance with starting a new life. But we need your help.
Will you make a donation today to Catholic Charities and our many life-changing ministries? Your gift shares God’s love, while bringing real help and lasting hope to neighbors who have nowhere else to turn.
