Today our family is moving out of Samaritan House shelter. We found an apartment! We’re used to paying $525 for rent. Now we’re paying $1,350. The apartment has a lot of pluses. The boys will go to a good school in our neighborhood. We left our hometown in Illinois to seek a better life for our family. There were shootings and gang banging all around. I’ve been there. I’ve done it all. I lived that life. I don’t want my kids to live that life. This was my chance to make it better for my family. I’m 47 now and I’ve had three heart attacks. We’ve been together for 16 years. This was our first time away from home. When we came to Denver, we lived in a hotel with a voucher for a while. We felt down at first. But the good Lord didn’t have us go this far for us to turn around. We called Samaritan House and they gave us a room on the family floor. When you’re around here, everybody starts to become a family. I guess it felt so easy for us because we were never homeless. We’re blessed that we were able to do it. If your mind is open and you’re ready to get on your feet, Samaritan House is the place. We kept the faith. As long as you get up every day and stay focused and stick to what the plan is, you can do it. I’m grateful they simply took my family off the streets. There should be more places like this for families. I always say just do your footwork. You have to get out there. Keep faith and believe in God because he has a plan for you.
