First time mom Greta credits counseling at Marisol Health to be “best mom she can be”

When Greta first found out she was pregnant, she was excited but also filled with uncertainty. Having recently moved to the area, she was unsure how to navigate Denver without the support of family nearby. She was particularly uncertain about where to seek prenatal care. As a first-time mom, the weight of what was to come was overwhelming. But then she found Marisol Health, and everything began to change.

From her first visit at Marisol Health Denver, a Catholic Charities ministry that provides compassionate, comprehensive healthcare services with a focus on supporting women and families through pregnancy, mental health, and wellness care, Greta was greeted by a caring and attentive team. The staff was friendly, and the healthcare was top-notch. She felt relieved to have found a place where she could get not only receive excellent medical care but also feel a sense of support as she entered this new chapter of her life.

Greta would later be incredibly grateful for her decision to start counseling before the birth of her baby. In those sessions, she began to unpack feelings she hadn’t processed—feelings from her past that had remained unresolved, including the trauma of a sexual assault. The counselors at Marisol helped her not only focus on her physical health but also on her emotional well-being. They gave her tools to process her emotions, to prepare for the challenges of motherhood and to stay grounded through it all. When her son Junior was born, Marisol was waiting on in the wings to provide postpartum care.

The Marisol Health counselors also helped Greta navigate the emotional rollercoaster of motherhood. As a new mom, Greta experienced moments of joy and excitement as she watched her son grow, but also moments of deep frustration and exhaustion. Learning to communicate better with her partner and how to manage those tough moments made a huge difference in their relationship. “It’s been such a relief to have people help me be the best mom I can be to Junior.,” Greta reflected. “It’s helped me handle frustration better and be more patient.”

The changes in Greta’s life were not just emotional—they were practical, too. Marisol Health didn’t just provide prenatal and postpartum care; they also supported Greta during financially tight times. There were moments when she and her partner were struggling to make ends meet, and Marisol helped with essentials like diapers and wipes that were provided by Marisol Family. That act of kindness took a bit of the pressure off Greta’s shoulders, allowing her to focus more on her family and less on the day-to-day worries.

As her son began to grow, Greta marveled at his milestones—crawling, walking, learning new words. Each day brought something new, and the joy of watching him develop kept her moving forward. But she never forgot how hard it had been at first to get to this point.

Through the counseling, she’s learned how to self-regulate her emotions, how to understand herself better and how to communicate more effectively with her partner. These tools made a difference not just for her mental health but for her family dynamic as well. “It’s changed how I communicate,” she said.

Marisol’s mission, to walk alongside women and provide the care they need to thrive, was something that Greta deeply appreciated. “It means the world to me.” “They’ve been there when we needed them most, and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to be a better mom to my son.”

Junior turned one this past October. Greta still leans on Marisol as they continue to walk alongside her and her family. With the tools, support and love she continues to receive from Marisol, she is ready to continue her journey, equipped to face whatever comes next—both as a mother and as a person. And most of all, she committed to taking care of herself, because she now knows that in order to be the best mom she can e, she needs to prioritize her own well-being first.
