“God spoke to us and he usually speaks to both of us together”

The story of a mother-daughter duo who are giving back, one trim at a time

Nothing lifts the spirit like a fresh haircut—it’s dignity in a trim, confidence in a clip and self-worth in every snip. And for those without a home, it’s more than just a style—it’s a spark of hope.

Catholic Charities is proud to partner with Hair Cuts 4 Christ, a nonprofit created in 2018 to provide free haircuts to those experiencing homelessness or hardship, offering not only a fresh look but also a boost in confidence and dignity.

A Mother-Daughter Vision

The idea for Hair Cuts 4 Christ was born when Danielle Brown, a licensed hair stylist, approached her mother, Jeanette Luiz-Connor with a desire to give back. “Mom, I really want to do something to give back, but I don’t know what to do,” Danielle recalls telling her mom. Jeanette, a coordinator and nonprofit leader, immediately recognized the opportunity to combine Danielle’s gift for hairstyling with their shared passion for serving others. Together, they founded Hair Cuts 4 Christ—a program that would meet people where they are, offering a haircut service at no cost.

Danielle shared her inspiration saying, “God spoke to us and He usually speaks to both of us together.” With a team of dedicated volunteer stylists, Hair Cuts 4 Christ has expanded its reach across various shelters, churches and community centers, including Catholic Charities Samaritan House locations in Greeley and Fort Collins. What began as a simple desire to give back has grown into a heartfelt project that touches the lives of people in profound ways.

A Volunteer-Driven Initiative

At the heart of Hair Cuts 4 Christ is a team of volunteers who donate their time and expertise to serve others. From hairstylists to community members, the volunteers help spread love and compassion with every snip of the scissors. “We don’t have paid staff. Everyone who works with us is a volunteer,” said Danielle. “Our team is always changing, but we have about 10-12 volunteers who help us at various locations.”

Whether through helping raise funds or recruiting additional volunteers, Jeanette ensures the operation runs smoothly behind the scenes. “I’m the coordinator. I make sure we have the necessary supplies—snacks, freebies and of course the tools for the haircuts.”

Though the program’s core focus is haircuts, Hair Cuts 4 Christ also goes above and beyond by collecting donations to support those they serve. From backpacks filled with school supplies for kids to essential items like gloves, socks, razors and shampoo, the program provides tangible help to individuals in need. Every donation is made possible through the generosity of Grace Community Church, where Jeanette’s own congregation regularly supports their mission.

A Story of Transformation

One of the most rewarding aspects of Hair Cuts 4 Christ is the powerful stories they witness. Danielle recalls a woman they met at Samaritan House who hadn’t had a haircut in over 10 years due to financial struggles. “For us to be there and provide that service—it’s something she never thought she’d have the opportunity to receive. It’s not just about a haircut. It’s about showing love and care. It’s about restoring dignity.”

These kinds of connections continue to inspire the mother-daughter team. “We’ve had people break down in tears, so grateful to have something they thought was out of reach. A simple act of kindness can change someone’s life,” said Jeanette. And for Danielle, it’s more than just the haircut. “I’ve been in a place where I’ve lived in a shelter and when you can’t afford things like a haircut, it can really impact how you feel about yourself. If I can be the one to help turn someone’s day around, even just for a moment, then I’ve done my job.”

Looking Toward the Future

As Hair Cuts 4 Christ continues to grow, the team is exploring new ways to serve their communities. One of their upcoming initiatives is a mobile closet that will provide new or gently used business attire to those in need, further empowering individuals as they seek jobs and stability.

Additionally, Danielle’s partnership with the Matthew House is helping to extend the reach of Hair Cuts 4 Christ and its mission. The team is always open to new ideas and opportunities to support those they serve. “Whatever God says He wants us to provide, that’s what we do,” said Jeanette.
