Heart and Hands: Fred’s Journey of Service at Little Flower Center

At Catholic Charities Little Flower Assistance Center in Aurora, activity never stops. Little Flower provides food, clothing and job search assistance for thousands of individuals and families each year. While its impact on the community is profound, the heartbeat of our operations lies with our volunteers—and Fred Lengerich is one of the busiest.

Fred has been volunteering at Little Flower for eight years, and in that time, he’s become an integral part of our operations. When asked about his role, Fred speaks with a quiet humility that belies the significance of his contributions. “For me, it’s about more than donating. I wanted to meet the people we’re helping and see how everything works.”

Fred’s responsibilities are wide-ranging and essential. From arranging food packages to organizing volunteers when the delivery trucks arrive, his work ensures that resources are distributed efficiently and effectively. “When food comes in, we’ve got to get it into cold storage quickly. It’s all about teamwork and making sure nothing goes to waste.”

The center’s operations are a marvel of organization. Despite limited space and only two part-time staff members, Fred and more than 100 volunteers manage to serve 25,000 people annually with food alone. “I’ve never seen space used so efficiently,” Fred said.

Fred’s favorite part of volunteering is meeting the people who come to the center for assistance. “It’s touching to see the diversity of people we serve. Most are incredibly polite and accommodating, even in tough circumstances. With tools like Google Translate, we’re able to bridge language barriers and connect them with the support they need.”

While food distribution is a major focus, the center also offers a range of other services, including job search assistance, legal resources and help for seniors. Fred emphasized the importance of these efforts. “It’s not just about food. We’re helping people get back on their feet in every way we can.”

Fred’s dedication is a reflection of the center’s mission, as described by its site director, Donna Potter. “Our volunteers keep this place running. Without them, we couldn’t serve the community the way we do. Fred is a shining example of that commitment.”

For Fred, the work is deeply fulfilling, though not without its challenges. “It can be hard at times. But knowing you’re making a real difference—it’s worth it.”

During the 2024 holiday season, Fred and the team at Little Flower were busier than ever, preparing for their annual Joy Drive. This event provided gifts for 600 children, 100 seniors and teen parents, bringing a bit of holiday cheer to those who need it most.

“It’s a lot of work,” Fred said with a smile. “But it’s also a reminder of why we’re here.”

For those inspired by Fred’s story, Donna encourages donations and volunteer efforts. “Every dollar goes a long way. And every pair of helping hands makes our mission possible.”

Fred’s eight years at the Little Flower Center are a testament to the power of community and the profound impact one person can have. “It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them in practical ways. That’s what it’s all about.”
