Deep, lasting joy—no matter the circumstances—is something we all strive to have. Johnny is someone who carries that joy naturally, every single day. Whether he’s cracking a joke in the hallway or lending a hand to someone in need, his warmth is contagious. When asked how he manages to stay so positive, he smiles and says, “I must be. If I’m not, the weight of the world feels too heavy.”
Johnny’s journey hasn’t been easy, but his perseverance is what makes him remarkable.
It wasn’t his first time through Samaritan House Greeley’s Transition to Housing program—a Catholic Charities initiative that gives individuals experiencing homelessness the opportunity to rebuild. The program supports the shelter’s guests in setting and reaching personal goals like establishing income, building savings and securing stable housing. It’s more than a place to stay—it’s a chance to start again.
Each time Johnny participated in the past, he gave it his all. The first time through the program, he moved across the street into the Guadalupe Apartments, a permanent, subsidized housing complex run by Catholic Charities Housing. For a while, things looked stable. But health challenges—including frequent, unpredictable seizures—made long-term independence difficult. Eventually, Johnny found himself back at Samaritan House.
Returning wasn’t easy. “It was humbling,” he admitted. “But I knew I had done it before—and that meant I could do it again.”
Our staff never stopped believing in him. “They believed in me even when I was too tired to believe in myself,” Johnny shared. “That made all the difference.” With the encouragement of case managers and shelter staff, Johnny found the strength to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
There were days when he didn’t know what the next week—or even the next day—would bring. But Johnny never gave up. Despite the challenges, he continued to show up with a servant’s heart. He was often the first to volunteer—cleaning, sweeping the sidewalks, organizing donations or helping paint walls to keep the space looking fresh.
His consistency, kindness and resilience made him a source of encouragement for others in the shelter. “Johnny has this way of making you feel like things will be okay,” one staff member said. “His joy lifts the room.”
This time, Johnny took his time and waited for the right housing opportunity. He carefully saved his disability income, stayed committed to his plan and now—he’s moving into an apartment of his very own. It’s a place he can truly call home.
Johnny’s journey reminds us that the path to stability isn’t always linear. Sometimes it takes more than one try—and that’s okay. What matters most is not how many times you fall, but how many times you get back up. With support, perseverance and a hopeful heart, new beginnings are always possible.
His story reflects the very heart of Catholic Charities’ mission: to walk alongside those in need and to celebrate their victories—no matter how many tries it takes.
