Local clinic holds press conference, continues to provide medical care for poor and needy women
Denver, CO—Marisol Health’s network of licensed, comprehensive medical clinics for women in need threatened legal action by demanding removal of its image and video from a ProgressNow Colorado propaganda video that referenced it as a crisis pregnancy center that “often lies” and “refuses to provide accurate information.”
Michael J. Norton, an attorney with Thomas N. Scheffel & Associates, P.C., based in Denver, spoke during a press conference held May 23 about the video. Norton said he sent a letter to ProgressNow Colorado demanding it remove Marisol Health’s image and name from the video it posted on Facebook and YouTube titled “Crisis Pregnancy Centers.” The video is defamatory to the clinic, which offers comprehensive, medical reproductive healthcare to poor and needy women.
“The representations and implications about Marisol Health clinics depicted by ProgressNow and its affiliates in this video and related materials are false and defamatory,” Norton wrote in the demand letter. “Thus, we demand that all video footage of and references to Marisol Health on ProgressNow’s website or Facebook page, including the website or Facebook page of COLOR or any other ProgressNow affiliate, and posted to YouTube, be immediately deleted or redacted from all such websites, Facebook pages, or YouTube postings.”
Representatives of ProgressNow Colorado did not respond within the three days given in the demand letter.
Marisol Health, with clinics located in Denver and Lafayette, provides a full range of women’s health care services provided by licensed medical professionals. It offers reproductive healthcare and social and human services to meet the needs of women from all backgrounds and circumstances. In fiscal year 2017, Marisol Health provided care to 821 patients—70 percent of whom had incomes under $30,000. Some 45 percent of patients have no income or incomes less than $15,000 per year, 45 percent have Medicaid, and 32 percent are uninsured.
“True reproductive healthcare for women looks like what we provide at Marisol Health,” said Jan McIntosh, vice president of Marisol Services, which oversees Marisol Health. “It is what real life-affirming, medical care looks like for the low-income and needy women of our society. We are shocked and offended that an organization would use our name to make false statements about our licensed medical staff and seek to deter help for so many women who are often without food, housing, jobs, emotional support and quality medical care. We provide all of that to any woman who walks through our doors. Marisol Health is what authentic reproductive healthcare looks like.”
Through Marisol Health’s unique partnership with Bella Natural Women’s Care and Family Wellness, patients have access to three board-certified physicians, four nurse practitioners and a certified nurse midwife. Marisol Health also provides women with social and human services to meet women’s physical, material, emotional and spiritual needs.
“The unique blend of both comprehensive medical and social services that we provide is a viable answer to the delivery of healthcare in our country,” said Dede Chism, co-founder and executive director of Bella Natural Women’s Care and Family Wellness, located in Englewood. “We provide comprehensive healthcare services including but not limited to full prenatal care, delivery and postpartum care, problem gynecology, infertility, acute medical care, surgical services including robotics for many women’s health care issues, comprehensive ultrasound services for the pregnant and non-pregnant patient and in-house education for nutrition, diabetic education and fertility awareness.”
