Mom welcomes newborn while at Samaritan House shelter

Two weeks before Jessica, 25, delivered her baby girl, she prepared a crib in her room at Samaritan House shelter.

“I don’t know what I’d do without Samaritan House,” she said. “It’s a very calm environment. They really do help you get off your feet.”

Jessica, 25, was frightened when she first came to Denver from Colorado Springs, Colo. Alone and without family support since 16 years old, she looked for a safe place to restart her life. She discovered she was pregnant and came to Catholic Charities for help.

“Someone told me to come to Denver—there’s more resources,” she said. “I was scared when I first came here.”

Jessica first stayed at Samaritan House Women’s Emergency Shelter. The emergency and transitional shelters gave Jessica safety, warm meals, and a dedicated case manager.

"Everyone's very nice, and we have a good place to come home to at night," she said.

She welcomed her baby in January after moving to the family floor of Samaritan House shelter where she received more in-depth support through a 120-day program.

“The case managers are really great here,” she said. “It makes it where you can save more money.”

She was connected with Catholic Charities’ Gabriel House Project that provided baby supplies and clothing for her newborn. Case managers also helped her reestablish employment and has plans to send her baby for care at a nearby Early Childhood Education center. Jessica began counseling to address a challenging childhood, her bipolar diagnosis, and recover from an abusive relationship.

Samaritan House also provided spiritual support. She was grateful for the deacon who visited her and Father Michael, the shelter chaplain who baptized her baby in the chapel.

Jessica said she’s optimistic about the future. With Samaritan House’s support, she’s applied for housing and looks forward to a new life with her baby.

“I’m pretty excited to get a place,” she said. “Sometimes it’s hard to ask for help, but I just want to be here for my girl and to provide for her. And to see the best in myself.”
