Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin and her family will once again donate part of their Thanksgiving Day to serve a holiday meal at Catholic Charities’ Samaritan House, a shelter for Denver’s homeless.
The meal will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Samaritan House, located at 2301 Lawrence Street in downtown Denver. [NOTE: Franklin will be available for media interviews from 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., prior to the meal.]
The dinner will be prepared under the direction of Samaritan House Executive Chef Dave Uelze, in partnership with associates from The Westin and Sheraton downtown hotels.
Franklin returns home from California for the holiday. She is now in her freshman year at the University of California, Berkeley on athletic scholarship. Despite her short time in Denver, she remains committed to the mission of Samaritan House.
Commenting on her participation in last year’s holiday meal, Franklin said “I’m very, very fortunate and there aren’t as many people as fortunate as I am. I just want to share my happiness with everyone else.”
Samaritan House’s Thanksgiving Dinner is an annual tradition, now in its twelfth year. Nearly 200 of the center’s resident men, women and children attend the meal each year.
Located in downtown Denver, the Samaritan House was built in 1986 and was specifically designed and constructed for service to the homeless. It can accommodate over 350 men, women and children each night. There are separate facilities for single men, single women and families with children. Residents receive a bed, food and clothing while participating in the shelter’s 120-day Levels Program, which offers a structured path towards obtaining stable income and housing.
On-site services include one-to-one case management, medical care, child care, life skills classes and referrals for employment, housing, social service assistance and educational opportunities. The center also coordinates an active children’s program and an age-appropriate program for teens.
All of Samaritan House’s services occur in coordination with Catholic Charities’ broader spectrum of ongoing ministries in Family and Childcare Services, Women’s Services and Shelter Services.
