Nestled between the soaring peaks and rivers of Glenwood Springs, a new chapter is unfolding for many in need of affordable housing. The Benedict, a new development by Catholic Charities Housing, is set to provide a rare opportunity for low-income seniors to live in a place where they can enjoy both the beauty of the mountains and the comfort of an affordable home.
The project, currently under construction and set to wrap up in September 2025, is already generating a buzz in the community. In a town known for its expensive real estate, where properties can easily exceed millions of dollars, affordable housing is in short supply. Glenwood Springs, with its picturesque views, natural hot springs and thriving tourism industry, has long been out of reach for many seniors on fixed incomes.
But the Benedict Apartments are about to change that.
“We are really excited about this project, and we’ve always got some other development projects that we’re kicking around. Unfortunately, the need in Colorado is massive,” said Justin Raddatz, Executive Director of Catholic Charities Housing. “So what we’re doing feels big, but it’s just a drop in the bucket. We’ll continue to do everything that we can within our power and do it with a smile in the best way that we can.”
The cost of building in such a wealthy area is balanced by the community’s commitment to meeting the needs of its most vulnerable citizens. Glenwood Springs may be known for its high-end resorts and luxury real estate, but there is also a deep undercurrent of compassion and care for those who live on the margins. The Benedict Apartments represent the town’s effort to make sure that everyone, including seniors who have spent their lives contributing to the community, can afford to live in the place they love.
Apartments at The Benedict are designed with the unique needs of seniors in mind. Each unit is a spacious one-bedroom apartment, with a few studios available for those who need a more compact living space. The apartments feature easy access to common areas, elevators and a community room where residents can gather for social activities, share meals or simply enjoy the company of their neighbors.
The building is designed to be energy-efficient, with environmentally conscious features like solar panels and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. And with a location close to public transportation, local shops and medical facilities, the Benedict Apartments will provide a truly livable environment for seniors who may not have the resources to own a car or travel far.
For the seniors who will eventually call the Benedict Apartments home, the project represents a new chapter—one filled with possibilities and security. It’s a place where they can remain in a community they love, close to friends and family, without the burden of unaffordable housing costs. And for Glenwood Springs, it’s a tangible step toward inclusivity, a reminder that even in a wealthy town, there is always room for compassion and community.
