Truckload of turkeys to boost Thanksgiving turkey drive

Volunteers from the Mormon church unload a truck full of frozen turkeys outside Samaritan House shelter last year. The church is making another donation this year.

More donations needed to help families and individuals facing homelessness

Right in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Samaritan House shelter will receive a truckload of turkeys delivered from Utah to help feed the homeless—3,000 turkeys donated by the Mormon church on Friday morning.

The load of frozen turkeys crossed state lines and will arrive outside Samaritan House shelter downtown on Nov. 17. A volunteer group from the Mormon church and from Catholic Charities of Denver will unload the turkeys into coolers before they are prepared and served to the homeless and families in need.

"This is a blessing for our shelters," said Deacon Geoff Bennett, who oversees the turkey drive for Catholic Charities of Denver. “These turkeys will provide a warm meal to thousands of families and children struggling to make ends meet this holiday season. We're grateful to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their generous donation during this great time of need."

However, more donations online are needed to help provide clothing, food and support services to shelter residents over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Elder Tom Priday, Area Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said the donation from LDS Humanitarian Aid was made in response to the huge increase in need in the Denver area. This is the second year the church made a donation to the turkey drive.

The donated turkeys feed thousands of homeless men, women and children in the Denver area. The annual turkey drive is held at Samaritan House shelter in downtown Denver and at Catholic Charities’ others shelters—The Mission in Fort Collins and Guadalupe Community Center in Greeley.

Last year, Catholic Charities collected more than 4,000 turkeys. This year, Catholic Charities hopes to receive more than 5,000 turkeys. Catholic Charities will also make available more than 2,500 donated turkeys to area parishes and food banks to fight hunger in Colorado.

The shelters will accept turkey donations through December 1. For more information, visit
