Volunteer Spotlight: Tom – Our “First Responder” With A Heart Of Gold

At Samaritan House Greeley, every act of kindness matters but some stand out as truly unforgettable. Tom, one of our most dedicated volunteers, is the kind of person who hears a need and immediately asks, “How can I help?” That spirit of generosity is why he was honored with the First Responder Award at this year’s Larimer and Weld County volunteer appreciation event.

The award was created specifically for Tom by the Samaritan House Greeley team, as part of a series of personalized recognitions designed to honor the unique contributions of several outstanding volunteers.

Tom began volunteering at Samaritan House Greeley, Weld County’s only 24-hour shelter for women and families experiencing homelessness, a decade ago with his family. At the time, he was looking for a meaningful way to inspire his teenage son to serve others. He led by example, committing to serve dinner once a month. That experience left a lasting impact on his family — and he’s continued serving ever since.

Most recently, Tom exemplified his quiet generosity when a family of five arrived at our emergency shelter. With three children under age 3, the parents were doing their best to manage daily life, but it was clear they needed help. Carrying toddlers while juggling bags and belongings, they lacked a simple item that would make a world of difference: a stroller. Something many of us take for granted, but for them, it meant comfort, mobility and a bit of relief in an overwhelming time.

When staff reached out to our volunteer network, Tom didn’t just say yes — he showed up the next day with a brand-new stroller in hand.

That evening, when the family returned to the shelter, they were stunned. The stroller wasn’t just a piece of equipment. It was a symbol of care, dignity and the community that surrounds them. It was a moment of grace, and Tom was the vessel.

Tom is known for quietly and consistently responding to material needs. He brings diapers, hygiene items, warm socks and more. His steady presence reminds us that volunteering doesn’t always mean grand gestures. Sometimes, it simply means being ready to serve.

Tom, thank you for being a light in the lives of those we serve. Your selflessness and quiet compassion make you a true first responder in every sense of the word.
