When a group of women from Xcel Energy arrived at Samaritan House 48th, they came ready to serve but they also came to stand beside other women.
Part of Xcel Energy’s GROW Business Resource Group, a network at Xcel focused on the professional development of women, the team chose to volunteer at Samaritan House 48th because of its mission to support women experiencing homelessness. The connection was clear: women supporting women.
Samaritan House 48th, a program of Catholic Charities of Denver, provides safe shelter, meals and support services for up to 270 women each night. More than just a place to stay, it offers dignity, stability and the opportunity for a fresh start.
Throughout the day, the volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They constructed new shower and office chairs, organized socks and toiletries and stepped in wherever help was needed. What might have taken days was completed in just a few hours—a reflection of their teamwork and commitment.
For Jules, facility manager at Samaritan House 48th, the impact was immediate.
“It would have taken me days to do what they accomplished in just a few hours,” she shared. “Their help made a real difference for our guests.”
But the impact of the day went beyond the projects completed.
Sasha, Xcel Energy’s community engagement manager, described the day as uplifting, a chance to step outside of the workplace and into meaningful service together.
Moments like these are at the heart of Catholic Charities’ mission.
Samaritan House 48th is a place where women find safety, support and compassion during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. And it is made stronger through partnerships with organizations like Xcel Energy—where employees choose to invest their time and talents in service to others.
In serving together, these women helped create a more welcoming space and, in the process, became part of a larger story of hope.
