At Archdiocesan Housing, a place to flourish for Sarah

Shelly and her husband found everything they could have hoped for their daughter at Archdiocesan Housing, a ministry of Catholic Charities of Denver.

Their 23-year-old daughter Sarah (pictured above, right) happily lives in a one-bedroom apartment at Villa Sierra Madre, a secure and remodeled complex in Silverthorne. Although Sarah was born with cognitive delays, with a little extra help, she maintains a job and lives independently.

It was Archdiocesan Housing and supportive services that made it possible for Sarah and for her mom to feel comfortable with her move.

“It’s everything we could have ever wanted for our daughter,” Shelly shared from their home in Kremmling. “It’s huge. It gave her all the independence. That was security for me, too. It’s clean and everything is brand new.”

Her daughter has learned to take responsibility and to advocate for herself with the support from the Developmental Disability Resource Center, which helps Sarah maintain independence in her apartment in Silverthorne. Services were not available living with her parents and for years, Shelly and her husband, Ted, did not know a complex like Villa Sierra Madre existed. Her previous apartment was not as new or secure.

Shelly spoke on the Dan Caplis radio program on AM 630 KHOW to share her experience and encourage more people to discover Archdiocesan Housing. For their family, it made a significant difference.

“We live in a rural part of Colorado where there’s no services available for her, so she moved down to Silverthorne,” she shared with Dan Caplis. “Without the help of the Catholic Church and the amazing people down there, she wouldn’t be able to be who she is. She’s an amazing shining example in that community.”

Shelly is filled with gratitude and humbled by Catholic Charities’ Archdiocesan Housing and generous support.

“I can’t tell you how very grateful we are,” Shelly shares. “If you ever come up here, go by City Market and you’ll see her. She’s a beautiful person.”
